Oman Agrees to Develop Biogas from Organic Waste

Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) and OQ Trading have signed an agreement to develop a national project focused on producing biogas and bio-carbon dioxide from organic waste collected at landfills and future biofacilities managed by be’ah. This project aims to transform organic waste into renewable energy sources, supporting Oman’s clean energy goals.

The initiative will harness around 20 million cubic meters of biogas from be’ah-managed sites. The biogas is expected to consist of approximately 40% biomethane, a renewable fuel, and 60% bio-carbon dioxide. Both gases have various applications in sustainable industrial processes and energy production.

Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on technical and economic studies, assess infrastructure requirements, and explore commercial opportunities for marketing the biogas and bio-carbon dioxide. This project aligns with Oman Vision 2040 by creating local investment opportunities and promoting sustainable development.

The partnership combines be’ah’s expertise in waste management with OQ Trading’s experience in the energy sector. It is expected to enhance Oman’s position as a regional hub for clean energy and contribute to the country’s carbon neutrality goals.

This biogas project represents a key step in Oman’s efforts to improve waste management efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide alternative energy sources. It also reflects a broader national commitment to adopting low-carbon and renewable energy solutions in line with global environmental trends.
