Malaysia Tops China in Thai Tourism for 2025

Thailand has welcomed over 15 million international visitors between January 1 and June 8, 2025. For the first time, Malaysia has become the number one country of origin for tourists visiting Thailand, overtaking China in total arrivals.
According to official data from the Thai government, 2,041,002 Malaysians visited Thailand in the first five months of the year. In comparison, 2,029,481 visitors came from China. India followed in third place with 1,035,864 tourists, while Russia and South Korea recorded 981,011 and 702,267 visitors respectively.
These tourists have contributed significantly to the Thai economy. In total, the revenue generated from foreign visitors reached 699,295 million baht during this period. The rise in tourist numbers is helping many local businesses recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic slowdown.
Malaysia’s rise as the top source of tourists is due to several factors. Its close proximity to Thailand makes travel convenient and affordable. Many Malaysians choose to travel by car or bus across the border. Cultural similarities, shared food preferences, and religious sites also encourage travel between the two countries.
Thailand has taken major steps to simplify the entry process for tourists. One such step is the removal of the TM6 immigration form, which previously had to be filled out on arrival. On May 1, 2025, the country introduced the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), which allows travelers to complete entry forms online before arriving. This new system helps reduce waiting times and speeds up the immigration process.
Another reason for the boost in tourism is Thailand’s ongoing campaign to promote travel. The Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025 campaign offers travel discounts, sports events, and cultural festivals aimed at attracting more international visitors. The campaign focuses on both new and returning travelers, encouraging them to explore destinations across the country.
China, which used to be the largest market for Thai tourism, is still recovering. Outbound travel from China remains slow due to economic concerns and changes in travel behavior. However, experts expect the numbers to improve in the second half of 2025 as travel confidence grows.
Tourists from India continue to rise due to strong travel demand, affordable packages, and growing interest in Thai beaches and wedding destinations. Russian tourists, despite global political tensions, continue to travel to Thailand for long stays, especially during the winter months. South Korean tourists are also growing in number, driven by media influence and strong interest in Thai cuisine and shopping.
Thailand has set a target of 35 million international visitors by the end of 2025. To meet this goal, the government is increasing flight connections, investing in regional airports, and offering new visa options for long-term stays. Authorities are also improving tourist services and digital tools to make travel easier and more enjoyable.
The tourism sector plays a big role in the Thai economy. It supports more than 4 million jobs and brings benefits to cities and rural areas alike. Hotels, restaurants, markets, and transport services all see growth when more tourists arrive.
For travelers planning a trip to Thailand, it is now easier than ever. The TDAC can be filled out online, helping travelers skip long lines at the airport. Visitors should also check visa requirements, travel updates, and safety tips to make the most of their journey.
As Malaysia leads the way in tourist arrivals, Thailand continues to welcome visitors with open arms. With strong support from the government and exciting offers for travelers, the country is on track to have one of its best tourism years yet.
