UNRWA Head: US Gaza Aid Model Wasteful, Distracts Crisis

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, criticized the new US-backed aid distribution system in Gaza, calling it a waste of resources and a distraction from ongoing humanitarian atrocities. Speaking in Japan, Lazzarini said the current aid system in Gaza is already effective and that UNRWA and other humanitarian groups have the experience needed to deliver aid to those in need.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening as shortages of food and medicine grow. Lazzarini warned that famine is approaching, urging that humanitarian efforts be allowed to continue without interference. The US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began operations at an aid center in Rafah, southern Gaza, on Tuesday. Thousands of Palestinians rushed into the center, causing chaotic and unsafe scenes.
These developments came shortly after Israel partially eased its blockade, which began in early March and has caused critical shortages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted there was a momentary loss of control at the aid center, though officials called the distribution a success. The new US-backed aid model bypasses the United Nations system, with Israel supporting it to keep aid supplies away from Hamas.
This model has faced criticism for not following core humanitarian principles and for excluding many vulnerable Palestinians. UNRWA remains the primary UN agency experienced in delivering aid in Gaza and warns that many people will be left without needed assistance if this new model continues. The blockade has led to a dire humanitarian crisis affecting nearly two million people, with shortages of food, medicine, water, and fuel threatening lives.
International groups continue to call for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza, emphasizing aid must be based on need and respect humanitarian principles. The situation remains complex due to political tensions, but humanitarian organizations keep pushing for safe and fair aid delivery.
