Poland PM Tusk Calls Confidence Vote Amid Changes

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday that the parliament will hold a confidence vote on his government on June 11. This comes after a significant political shift following the recent presidential election where conservative Karol Nawrocki defeated the liberal Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski. Tusk described the situation as a “new political reality” for the country but stressed that the government’s responsibilities and the constitution remain unchanged.

Tusk’s government manages the country’s daily affairs independently from the presidency. However, the president has important powers, including the ability to veto legislation and influence foreign policy. Nawrocki’s win is expected to challenge Tusk’s pro-European Union policies. This coalition has faced internal disagreements and has not been able to deliver on key promises, including reforms to the country’s abortion laws. Karol Nawrocki is set to take office on August 6, replacing Andrzej Duda, who is stepping down after serving the maximum two terms allowed by the Polish constitution.
