Netflix Hikes Nigerian Premium Plan to N8,500

Netflix has increased its subscription prices in Nigeria for the first time in 2025. This is the third price hike since 2024. The Premium Plan now costs N8,500 per month, up from N7,000, marking a 21.43% increase. The Standard Plan has risen from N5,500 to N6,500, an 18.18% jump. The Basic Plan price went up from N3,500 to N4,000, and the Mobile Plan, Netflix’s cheapest option, is now N2,500, up from N2,200.

In 2024 alone, Netflix raised prices twice—first in April and then in July. The company explained these increases are part of a global strategy to grow revenue and fund more content. Netflix noted that price changes also respond to local market factors, including inflation and taxes.

This price hike comes amid rising inflation in Nigeria, which has pushed up the cost of many products and services. Many Nigerians are struggling with higher food prices, and the increase in home entertainment costs adds to financial pressure. The recent 50% rise in data prices by telecom operators further complicates affordability for many households.

Other major pay-TV providers in Nigeria, like Multichoice Nigeria, have also raised prices multiple times in the past year, causing dissatisfaction among consumers. Netflix is adjusting prices globally, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

In Africa, Nigeria is not alone. Last month, Netflix increased prices in South Africa for three of its four plans. The Mobile Plan rose by 20% from R49 to R59 per month, the Standard Plan increased from R159 to R179, and the Premium Plan went up from R199 to R229. The Basic Plan remained at R99. These changes already apply to new customers, with existing subscribers seeing the increases in upcoming billing cycles.

Streaming companies face rising costs as they invest more in original content and technology. Regional price changes reflect local economic challenges like inflation and taxes. Consumers are encouraged to review their subscription choices to find the best fit for their budgets.
