Matt Doyle and Senzel Ahmady to Star in ‘The Great Gatsby’ Musical in Seoul

Matt Doyle and Senzel Ahmady will headline the upcoming Seoul production of the Broadway musical The Great Gatsby. The show will open in August 2025 at the GS Arts Center in southern Seoul. This Korean staging is part of a rare three-country run and promises to bring the glamour of Broadway to South Korea.

The production follows successful performances in New York and London, and it aims to bring the same high-quality experience to Korean audiences.

Matt Doyle takes on the role of Jay Gatsby

Matt Doyle, who won a Tony Award in 2022, will play the role of Jay Gatsby, a rich and mysterious man living in 1920s America. Doyle is known for his strong acting and vocal skills. He has appeared in several Broadway productions including Spring Awakening, Bye Bye Birdie, War Horse, and The Book of Mormon.

His presence in the Seoul version of the musical adds to the show’s global reputation and raises interest among theater fans in Korea.

Senzel Ahmady cast as Daisy Buchanan

Opposite Doyle, Senzel Ahmady will play Daisy Buchanan. She gained fame for her performance as Princess Jasmine in the North American tour of Aladdin. Her role in The Great Gatsby marks another step in her fast-growing career.

She brings energy and emotion to the role of Daisy, a central figure in the story and the reason behind Gatsby’s dream of success.

Broadway-level cast joins Korean stage

In addition to the lead roles, the show features a full cast of Broadway talent. Gerald Caesar will play Nick Carraway, the story’s narrator. Amber Ardolino plays Jordan Baker, while Jeanna De Waal appears as Myrtle Wilson. Wes Williams will take on the role of Tom Buchanan, Tally Sessions plays George Wilson, and Ed Staudenmayer joins as Meyer Wolfsheim.

These experienced performers help bring the full atmosphere of a Broadway musical to Seoul.

The show is built for Korean audiences

Unlike many touring productions, this version of The Great Gatsby has been specially developed for Korean viewers. It is not a traveling version of the Broadway show but a full original production that matches Broadway standards.

The production will be performed in English with Korean subtitles. This allows local audiences to enjoy the original emotion and meaning of the performance. A Korean-language version with Korean actors is planned for next year.

A project led by a Korean producer

The musical is produced by Shin Chun-soo, a Korean producer who became the first Asian lead producer on Broadway. He has brought The Great Gatsby to three major cities—New York, London, and now Seoul—making it one of the few productions to run in three countries at the same time.

His goal is to show that Korean theater can compete with the best in the world. The Seoul version is the latest step in that direction.

A creative mix of music, dance, and style

The musical is based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It tells the story of love, hope, and loss in the 1920s. The music, written by Jason Howland, uses jazz rhythms to bring energy to the stage. Choreography by Dominique Kelley adds motion and excitement to each scene.

The set and costume design reflect the Art Deco style of the time, giving the audience a feeling of stepping into the Jazz Age.

Key dates and ticket information

Previews for the Seoul production begin on August 1. The official opening night is set for August 8. Tickets will go on sale starting May 20 through major online ticketing platforms.

Prices will vary depending on seat location and performance dates, with early previews likely offering discounted rates.

A big moment for Korean theater

This staging of The Great Gatsby is more than just a show. It represents a growing trend of global theater projects with strong connections to Korea. It shows how Korean producers, actors, and creative teams are taking leading roles in international arts.

With top-level talent, exciting music, and an emotional story, this musical is set to become one of the year’s most talked-about events in South Korea’s performing arts scene.
