NBC Cancels ‘Suits LA’ After One Season Due to Poor Ratings

NBC has officially canceled Suits LA, a spin-off of the popular Suits series, just months after it premiered in February 2025. The legal drama failed to meet viewer expectations and has now joined a growing list of NBC shows that won’t return for another season.
Star Cast Couldn’t Save the Show
Suits LA featured a well-known cast, including Stephen Amell, Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, and Bryan Greenberg. It also welcomed original Suits actors Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, and David Costabile in guest roles. The show aimed to expand the Suits universe and attract longtime fans of the original series.
Despite the familiar faces and early buzz, the show struggled to keep an audience. Ratings remained low throughout its first season, and most reviews were negative.
Storyline Failed to Connect
The official plot focused on Ted Black (played by Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York who starts a new life representing rich clients in Los Angeles. His law firm was in crisis, and the drama centered on his moral conflict as he returned to a role he once despised.
NBC hoped the mix of legal battles, ethical dilemmas, and high-stakes drama would create a hit. Instead, viewers found the storyline slow and unoriginal. Critics pointed out that Suits LA lacked the charm and fast-paced energy of its predecessor.
Part of NBC’s Larger Cuts
The cancelation of Suits LA is part of a bigger move by NBC to reshape its lineup. The network is preparing for its annual upfront presentation in New York on May 12. Several other shows have also been canceled ahead of the event.
These include:
- The Irrational (Drama)
- Lopez vs. Lopez (Comedy)
- Night Court (Comedy)
NBC’s recent actions suggest a shift toward streamlining its content and focusing on more promising or cost-effective projects.
A Trend Across Networks
NBC is not alone in making big changes. Many networks are reviewing their programming as audience habits continue to shift. With streaming services gaining ground, traditional broadcasters face pressure to deliver strong viewership and social media buzz quickly.
Short-run cancellations are becoming more common. Shows are now expected to prove their value within a few episodes or risk being pulled. Suits LA is the latest casualty in this trend.
What This Means for the Suits Universe
The original Suits series aired from 2011 to 2019 and built a loyal fanbase over nine seasons. It became even more popular in recent years after finding success on Netflix.
NBC hoped to capture that same magic with Suits LA. Unfortunately, the spin-off didn’t live up to the original. This puts a pause on any further expansion of the Suits franchise—at least for now.
Still, the brand itself remains valuable. Industry experts believe that with the right story and cast, Suits could return in another form. Whether that’s a reboot, a new spin-off, or even a movie, remains to be seen.
Viewer Response and Online Buzz
Online, fans of the original Suits had mixed reactions. Some were excited to see familiar faces, but many shared disappointment with the new storyline. Social media discussions reflected the show’s weak start and unclear direction.
Review platforms such as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb also showed below-average scores for Suits LA, contributing to NBC’s decision to cancel it.
NBC’s Programming Future
NBC’s choice to cancel multiple shows before its May 12 event shows a clear push toward tighter content planning. The network is likely trying to reduce risks and focus on shows that can compete in the evolving TV market.
In the coming months, NBC is expected to announce new projects, including more reality content and limited series formats, which are seen as lower-risk and better suited to current viewer habits.
