Cruz Azul Wins 7th Concacaf Title, Beats Vancouver 5-0

Cruz Azul delivered a dominant performance against the Vancouver Whitecaps to win the Concacaf Champions Cup 5–0 on June 1, 2025, at Estadio Universitario Olímpico in Mexico City. The victory marks Cruz Azul’s seventh Champions Cup title and their first since 2014. From the start, Cruz Azul controlled the game, scoring four goals before halftime and adding a fifth shortly after the break.
Ignacio Rivero opened the scoring in the 8th minute after Vancouver’s defense failed to clear the ball. The home team doubled the lead in the 28th minute with a powerful shot from Lorenzo Faravelli. Cruz Azul continued to press, with Mateusz Bogusz and Angel Sepúlveda scoring in the 37th and 45th minutes. Sepúlveda added a second goal early in the second half to make the score 5–0.
Vancouver’s players struggled to cope with Cruz Azul’s intensity and quick passing. The Whitecaps’ midfielder lost possession multiple times, and striker Brian White found little support in attack. The usual wing combinations that brought Vancouver success during the season failed to connect effectively against the strong Mexican defense.
Cruz Azul dominated the match statistics with eight shots on goal compared to none for Vancouver and held 69 percent possession. The altitude in Mexico City may have also affected the Whitecaps’ performance, but Cruz Azul’s quality and experience were clear factors in the result.
This loss makes the Vancouver Whitecaps the third Canadian team to fall short in a Concacaf final, joining Toronto FC and CF Montréal. The Whitecaps now focus on maintaining their lead in the MLS Western Conference as the season progresses. Cruz Azul finishes their 2024–25 campaign on a high note after exiting the Liga MX playoffs earlier in the semifinals
