Huawei Launches First PC Running Its Own HarmonyOS Operating System

Chinese technology company Huawei launched its first personal computer powered by its own operating system, HarmonyOS, on Monday. The event took place in Chengdu, Sichuan province, marking a key step in China’s effort to develop domestic PC operating systems. The new PC can handle demanding tasks quickly. It opens a 1-gigabyte, 100-page PowerPoint file in just one second and supports running multiple applications smoothly. Huawei integrated artificial intelligence and intelligent interaction features into HarmonyOS to improve the user experience.
The PC comes with over 1,000 ecosystem apps, and Huawei expects this number to grow to more than 2,000 by the end of the year. The development of this PC took five years and involved over 10,000 engineers and 20 research institutes. Huawei has also secured more than 2,700 core patents related to the technology behind the PC.
Along with the new HarmonyOS PC, Huawei introduced the MateBook Fold, the world’s largest commercial foldable-screen PC. This device features an 18-inch screen that folds down to a portable 13-inch size. The slim design allows it to switch easily between a large display and a smaller, mobile form factor.
Huawei’s move to launch a PC with its own operating system comes amid China’s broader strategy to strengthen its technology industry and reduce dependence on foreign software. Developing HarmonyOS for PCs supports this goal by creating a local alternative to established operating systems like Windows and macOS.
This new PC and the expanding HarmonyOS ecosystem could encourage more software development and innovation within China. It may also offer consumers and businesses more choices for their computing needs.
Huawei plans to keep growing its HarmonyOS product line and encourage developers to build more apps for the system. This effort aims to build a strong ecosystem that can compete with global players.
