Expired U.S. Passports Can Be Used for Up to Two Years for Domestic Flights Without a REAL ID

Starting May 7, 2025, all travelers flying within the United States must show a REAL ID or an approved alternative form of identification. Many who have not yet obtained a REAL ID can use their expired U.S. passports for up to two years after expiration to board domestic flights. This information, confirmed by the Transportation Security Administration, gives travelers more time to adjust to the new requirements.

The REAL ID Act was introduced to improve security for air travel by requiring stricter standards for state-issued IDs. State governments have been issuing REAL ID-compliant licenses and cards, but the deadline led to increased demand and longer processing times. Using an expired passport as an alternative allows travelers to continue flying domestically without interruption.

Both expired passport books and passport cards are accepted by the TSA for up to two years after their expiration date. However, expired passports cannot be used for international travel or to return to the U.S. from abroad. Many countries require passports to be valid for at least six months beyond the travel date.

Travelers without a REAL ID can still fly domestically using a valid or recently expired passport, military IDs, permanent resident cards, or other approved forms of identification. Those needing a REAL ID should visit their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles and provide documents like proof of identity, Social Security number, and proof of residence.

The TSA recommends checking your identification ahead of time to avoid issues at airport security. This extended use of expired passports provides relief for travelers facing delays in obtaining a REAL ID, ensuring they can still fly safely within the U.S.
