Pride in the Park Returns to Maple Ridge on June 14 with Free Celebration for All Ages

Maple Ridge is set to celebrate diversity and inclusion with the return of Pride in the Park on Saturday, June 14. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Memorial Peace Park, located along 224 Street between Dewdney Trunk Road and Lougheed Highway. The celebration is free and welcomes everyone, offering music, performances, and fun activities for the whole family.

This year’s event will once again feature a lively stage program. Hosting the celebration will be David C. Jones, a familiar face in community events. Music will be played throughout the day by DJ Kwaz, adding energy and rhythm to the gathering. Drag performances are among the highlights of the event. Audiences can expect to see four talented performers take the stage at the park’s bandstand. Jaylene Tyme, who appeared on Canada’s Drag Race, will bring her unique style and charm. Carrie Dawn, a Taylor Swift impersonator, is also part of the show, along with Kara Juku, who won Vancouver’s Next Drag Superstar in 2020 and was Eastside Drag Phenomenon in 2019. Completing the lineup is Margaux Rita, another talented drag artist from Vancouver known for engaging performances.

The event was first launched in 2016 with a simple goal: to give youth in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows a Pride event close to home. Many young people in these communities take part in local 2SLGBTQIA+ support programs. Before Pride in the Park existed, they would have had to travel to larger cities to join similar events. Now, they can celebrate who they are right in their own community. The event plays an important role in providing visibility and encouragement for young people who are exploring their gender and sexual identities.

Pride in the Park is closely linked to youth services that support 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. These services include the Our Generation-Out Group, which is a free and confidential support group for youth between the ages of 14 and 18. The group welcomes those who are questioning or exploring their gender or sexuality and offers a safe place to connect with peers. Another group, called Our Youth TransSupport, provides a similar space for transgender youth aged 15 and under. Both groups help young people build confidence, find community, and express themselves freely in a non-judgmental setting.

The cost to organize Pride in the Park each year is about $2,000. Most of the funding comes from local organizations, volunteers, and donations. The goal is to keep the event free and open to everyone, no matter their background. Organizers also rely on volunteers to help set up, manage activities, and ensure the safety and comfort of all attendees.

Since it began, Pride in the Park has become a symbol of unity and progress in Maple Ridge. It reflects the community’s efforts to promote acceptance and respect for all people, regardless of how they identify. By creating a space that welcomes everyone, the event sends a clear message of support for diversity and inclusion.

Each year, the event grows in popularity. Families, youth, allies, and local leaders attend to show their support. The performances, music, and positive atmosphere make it not only meaningful but also fun. People often leave the event feeling more connected to their community.

The 2025 celebration aims to build on the success of past years. Organizers are hoping for a strong turnout and good weather. They encourage residents and visitors alike to join the festivities, meet new people, and learn more about the local 2SLGBTQ+ community. Whether attending with friends or family, guests will find activities and performances that appeal to all ages.

Pride in the Park also serves an educational role. Many attendees leave with a better understanding of the challenges that 2SLGBTQ+ youth face and the importance of having safe spaces in small communities. Events like this show the value of standing together, sharing experiences, and celebrating identity.

For those who want to support the event beyond attending, donations and volunteer opportunities are available. Even small contributions help cover costs and allow the event to grow. With continued community support, organizers hope to expand the program in the coming years. Plans include adding workshops, more performers, and vendor booths that highlight local artists and inclusive businesses.

Maple Ridge is proud to host Pride in the Park again in 2025. It is more than just a day of fun—it is a moment to stand together, celebrate differences, and create lasting memories. Residents are invited to join in the celebration and make it a day to remember.
